Books and talks

From digital copyright to the right to understand

Sixteen years of books, articles and talks, read as a path in five stages. The objects changed, from the ebook to the mind. The question stayed the same: how does a rule actually reach the people who must follow it?

The right to understand

Did the person who signed really understand?

Law presumes that whoever accepts has understood. With Habeas Mentem I try to reverse that presumption: whoever designs the environment must show it does not work against the person. With Neuro Legal Cortex I try to measure it. It is where everything below on this page leads.

Law as a product

What if a legal document were designed like a product?

If a rule can’t be understood, it is a design problem. With MakeMark I treated privacy and IP as products to use, not documents to file, and took legal design into classrooms and onto stages. This is where the idea of legal experience was born.

Data, ideas and startups onlife

How do you protect the data and ideas of those who innovate?

Years spent alongside startups and companies: privacy, trademarks, patents, blockchain, the right to be forgotten. And three books on the digital life of people and families. The constant: rules designed for a physical world, applied to one that no longer is.

Printing objects, printing organs

If an object can be printed, what is left of patents and trademarks?

3D printing and bioprinting challenge intellectual property and, in medicine, liability. I spoke about it at the European Commission, at the Rizzoli institute, at Maker Faire, and founded Italy’s first network on the subject.

Books, ebooks and copyright

Who owns a book when the book is a file?

I started here, when the ebook frightened publishers: digital publishing contracts, DRM, licences, self-publishing, piracy. And the first rules of online commerce. I wrote a handbook and a PhD thesis on it.
