The professional stays at the centre
Italian Law no. 132 of 23 September 2025 has a short article on intellectual professions. It is Article 13. I reread it often, because it applies to me too.
The first paragraph says that the use of AI systems in intellectual professions is aimed solely at instrumental and support activities, with the intellectual work that is the subject of the service remaining predominant.
The second paragraph adds a duty to inform. To safeguard the relationship of trust, information on the systems used by the professional must be communicated to the client "in clear, simple and comprehensive language".
What changes in practice
Two things, in my view.
First: judgement stays human. The tool can search, sort, suggest. Assessment, responsibility and signature remain with the professional.
Second: transparency towards the client becomes part of the service. A line in the engagement letter is not enough. We need to explain which tools we use, for what, with what limits. In a way that can be understood.
It is curious. The law asks professionals for exactly what we have been asking of documents for years: clarity. A good reason to start with our own engagement letters.
Has your lawyer, accountant or adviser ever explained which automated tools they use to work on your case?
